How do you darken a newly stained piece of furniture that has a clear top coat?
We recently had a piece of furniture custom made. The stain turned out lighter than we wanted but there is a clear top on it that acts as a sealant. Can we do anything to darken it a bit? Could we put some Old English on it? Or is there something else we could do?
Certainly if you’re looking for any appreciable change, you basically need to start back with raw wood. Anything else is only putting a slight tint onto the top coat. That said, they make paste wax for furniture in various dark tints, and you can gain a subtle difference by rubbing the piece out with the colored wax. There is nothing to lose except the labor and the wood will turn out silky smooth. Try it first in an inconspicuous spot. If you try this and the furniture is still not dark enough, the first step in refinishing will be to remove the wax with mineral spirits. Good Luck!
